About

The Surdna Foundation is a family-led philanthropic institution with more than a century of history, founded in 1917 by John Emory Andrus. The New York-based foundation seeks to create a more just and sustainable society by supporting communities and organizations working on racial justice, economic opportunity, environmental sustainability and the arts.

Rather than focusing on short-term relief, Surdna emphasizes long-term change and community-led solutions. It provides grants to nonprofit organizations and networks working to transform systems, expand economic inclusion, protect the environment and strengthen cultural life, with its programs organized around Inclusive Economies, Sustainable Environments and Thriving Cultures.
