About

Ripple Africa is a charitable organisation founded in 2003 by Geoff and Liz Furber to support rural communities in Malawi, particularly in the Nkhata Bay District. The organisation works to improve people's quality of life by promoting environmental conservation, sustainable agriculture, education, and healthcare. Its guiding philosophy is “providing a hand up, not a hand out,” which reflects its commitment to empowering local people with the skills, resources, and opportunities they need to build sustainable futures.

The organisation's mission is to protect the environment, create economic opportunities for local communities, and improve access to education and healthcare. Ripple Africa believes that communities are best placed to identify their own challenges and develop lasting solutions. It works closely with local residents, traditional leaders, and government departments to ensure that its projects respond to community needs and encourage long-term ownership and participation.

Ripple Africa delivers its work through environmental conservation, agricultural development, education, and healthcare programmes. Its environmental initiatives include tree planting, forest protection, sustainable fishing, and the promotion of fuel-efficient cookstoves to reduce pressure on forests. Its agricultural programmes help farmers grow nutritious crops, cultivate fruit trees, and develop sustainable farming businesses. In education, the organisation supports preschools, primary and secondary schools, reading clubs, and adult learning. Its healthcare initiatives include disability rehabilitation, menstrual health support, borehole repairs, and assistance to local health facilities.

Through its community-led approach, Ripple Africa aims to create healthier, more prosperous, and environmentally sustainable communities across Malawi. By combining conservation with agriculture, education, and healthcare, the organisation addresses interconnected challenges affecting rural families. Its work helps protect natural resources, strengthen livelihoods, improve learning opportunities, and support better health outcomes. Ultimately, Ripple Africa seeks to ensure that local communities have the knowledge, resources, and confidence to manage their own development and create lasting positive change for future generations.
