About

Urafiki Girls is a youth-led, female-led nonprofit organization based in Mwanza, Tanzania, dedicated to empowering girls and young women through education, skills development, mentorship, and community engagement. The organization began informally in 2014 with a group of 16 girls and was officially registered as a nongovernmental organization in 2021. Its mission is to create a safe and supportive environment where girls can develop their potential, exercise their rights, pursue their aspirations, and contribute to positive social change.

A central focus of Urafiki Girls is improving educational opportunities and building practical life skills among girls from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Through mentorship, peer support, school clubs, and learning activities, the organization helps participants strengthen their confidence, critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, and leadership abilities. It also supports adolescent girls and young mothers who face barriers to education and social participation.

The organization promotes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education to help girls develop the knowledge and skills needed to participate in the digital economy. Through its Msichana na Teknolojia (Girls in Technology) programme, participants learn about technology, digital innovation, mobile application development, and artificial intelligence. The programme encourages girls to identify challenges in their communities and develop creative, technology-based solutions that address local needs.

Urafiki Girls also implements programmes that respond to the needs of younger adolescent girls and out-of-school adolescent girls and young mothers. Its initiatives provide opportunities for personal development, social connection, health education, and informed decision-making. The organization also engages boys, young men, and community members to challenge harmful gender norms and promote equality. Through education, technology, mentorship, and community participation, Urafiki Girls works toward a society where girls and young women have the resources, support, and opportunities to thrive.
