UNCERF Support Helps Flood-Affected Communities Rebuild Their Lives in Burundi

The severe flooding in Burundi has sent many people away from their homes across several regions. However, funding from the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (UNCERF) has provided relief efforts in the affected communities.

UNCERF Enables Rapid Assistance for Flood-Displaced Families

According to a statement by UNOCHA, the flooding forced many households in Burundi to relocate as settlements became unsafe. Families lost their homes, farmlands, and belongings, leaving them in pain.

“In Burundi, floods disrupted lives and forced people to relocate repeatedly. Thanks to funding from UNCERF, communities now have a place to sleep, access to clean water, and opportunities to earn an income,” said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Displacement camps lacked adequate water supply and essential facilities, increasing health risks. Children, women, and senior citizens were affected as moving constantly disrupts their lives.

Aside from flooding, Burundi battles Cholera, which is why Doctors Without Borders opened a clinic in the Busuma Refugee Camp. UNCERF funding allowed humanitarian organisations to aid those in flood-affected areas. Emergency assistance allows families to enjoy access to safe shelter and clean water.

“We were moving again and again with no protection, but now we finally have a safe place to rest,” said a 34-year-old mother of 3, Marie Uwase

“This support helped us feel human again after losing everything,” added a 45-year old community leader, Joseph Nkurunziza

Recovery Efforts Help Communities Rebuild Their Lives

Aside from providing emergency services, the support helps families recover quickly. Those in these communities will enjoy livelihood support and employment opportunities.

The provision of cash assistance allowed households to enjoy food, health care, and education programs. These measures reduced reliance on aid and restored some confidence in the affected families.

Access to clean water near homes improved health conditions and reduced the burden on women and children. As one of the leading charities providing disaster relief around the world, its objectives are to improve the living conditions of those in need.

Humanitarian partners noted that flexible funding remains critical in adapting assistance to changing flood conditions. UNCERF support made it possible to address both immediate needs and longer-term recovery at the same time.

While flooding continues to pose serious risks in Burundi, UNCERF funding will allow more relief efforts for those in affected areas. However, more support is needed to provide essential services and protect vulnerable communities.
