New instruments, new beginnings: West High Orchestra gets major boost

West High School Orchestra will receive a major upgrade after getting funding from the Morgan Wallen Foundation. The grant will help West High acquire new instruments for its music program.

West High to get new instruments from Morgan Wallen Foundation Grant

West High School will be able to boost its music and orchestra program after securing a grant from the Morgan Wallen Foundation. The grant will support the school’s music and orchestra program with new instruments.

The school expects to receive violins, violas, cellos, and double basses. The total value of all the instruments to be received by the high school is pegged at $38,717.

The Knox County Commission formally approved the grant’s acceptance. The school’s orchestra director, Rachel Pena, called the reception of the instruments a great joy that will help bring music to life for generations.

“What a joy it is to receive these instruments and know that they will bring music to life for generations at West High School. Please receive our deepest gratitude!” she said in her appreciation letter.

Celebrity influence in the non-profit sector

The Morgan Wallen Foundation, like other foundations established by artists and other celebrities, has contributed to social causes. In 2024, the Foundation donated $500,000 for Hurricane Helene relief.

However, celebrity profits and individual donations primarily fund these foundations. The Morgan Wallen Foundation, for instance, gets its funding from tickets sold at Wallen’s concerts and other donations.

While some of these celebrity-owned foundations tackle a particular cause, others are more generally oriented. Matt Damon, for instance, established run Water.org, whose mission is to provide clean water and sanitation to less privileged communities.

In 2017, Rihanna received the Harvard University Humanitarian of the Year Award for her work through the Clara Lionel Foundation. She was awarded for her foundation’s education and emergency response programs.
