The MTN Foundation successfully trained 6,000 microbusiness owners virtually, equipping them with essential digital skills. The programme aims to help small businesses adopt digital tools to enhance productivity and expand market reach, marking the seventh phase of the Foundation’s national initiative targeting Nigeria’s micro, small, and medium enterprises (SMEs).
MTN Foundation launches seventh phase of ICT and business skills training
The MTN Foundation’s virtual programme directly supports the Federal Government’s National Digital Economy and SME Development agenda. Participants received training on practical digital solutions, including online payment adoption, digital record-keeping, and customer data management.
According to the MTN Foundation X post, the training is designed to move entrepreneurs from paper-based operations to efficient digital systems.

Business analyst Babajide Jolaolu-Kehinde led the first session, guiding participants through the SWOT framework to prioritise improvements.
“Keeping records digitally, adopting online payment options, and tracking customer data enable measurable growth,” said Babajide Jolaolu-Kehinde, business analyst. “The message is plain: hope is good, but action and systems make growth happen.”
The session, moderated by Temiloluwa Oyekanmi, MTN Foundation programme and partnerships lead, included live demonstrations of successful digital adoption. Participants observed how traders expanded using WhatsApp, online marketplaces, and basic spreadsheets.
Trainers highlighted the limitations of paper-based records, noting that digital tools provide real-time sales insights, reduce errors, and access wider markets. Participants were urged to commit to at least one digital improvement.
Programme context, follow-ups, and national impact
Since 2018, the MTN Foundation has implemented six phases across 22 Nigerian states, training 9,382 young microbusiness owners. In this seventh phase, 6,000 participants will benefit from a five-week blended programme combining instructor-led and self-paced online sessions.
The top 600 performers will receive an Equipment Grant worth 300 million naira. The MTN Foundation plans follow-up workshops and mentorship sessions to ensure continued skill development and alignment with national SME growth objectives.
Participants in prior phases reported improved business efficiency, customer outreach, and revenue tracking. This training initiative complements broader efforts to formalise Nigeria’s SME sector and accelerate digital adoption.
