The Role

PCS is hiring an Employment Law Caseworker to provide professional legal advice, guidance, and representation to members on employment law matters. This role is suitable for an experienced paralegal or an aspiring trainee solicitor in England and Wales who wants to qualify through the SQE route while gaining practical, supervised legal experience.

PCS offers fully funded accredited training with one day per week study release and supervision by a qualified solicitor, enabling you to complete your SQE within two years while undertaking meaningful casework as part of your day-to-day responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Campaign Strategy and Leadership

  • Provide legal advice and representation to members on employment law issues
  • Conduct legal research and prepare claims, advice, and formal legal documents
  • Support senior colleagues on complex legal matters
  • Deliver employment law briefings and updates to staff and representatives
  • Contribute to the union’s legal and employment rights strategy and policy objectives

Donor Engagement and Major Gifts

  • Advise members and representatives on unfair dismissal, wrongful termination, discrimination, and harassment cases
  • Liaise with solicitors and external bodies regarding personal casework
  • Represent PCS or its members at employment tribunals and other official bodies
  • Communicate legal information through reports, briefings, meetings, and conferences

Campaign Culture and Ecosystem Building

  • Support PCS committees, planning processes, and equality initiatives
  • Promote team working, confidentiality, and professional standards
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of employment law and legislative developments
  • Uphold PCS values, data protection standards, and health and safety responsibilities

Requirements

  • Qualifying law degree or at least two years’ experience in an employment law role
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage workloads and complex legal issues collaboratively
  • Understanding of UK political processes and the role of trade unions
  • Commitment to equality, diversity, and professional standards set by the SRA
  • Willingness to undertake training toward SQE qualification and ongoing development
