About Communities In Schools of Central Texas
Communities In Schools of Central Texas (CISCT) empowers students to stay in school and achieve in life by surrounding them with a community of support. As part of the national Communities In Schools network, the organization delivers integrated student support through school-wide services, targeted group interventions, and individualized assistance. Through its AmeriCorps programme, CISCT places mentors in elementary and middle schools across Central Texas to build meaningful relationships with students, helping them overcome barriers and access opportunities that promote educational success and long-term wellbeing.
The Role
CISCT is seeking AmeriCorps Mentors to provide consistent, caring support to elementary and middle school students across Central Texas. Through one-to-one mentoring and small group facilitation, you will help students strengthen academic engagement, build social-emotional skills, and develop the confidence needed to thrive both in and outside the classroom.
This is a rewarding opportunity for individuals passionate about educational equity and youth development. No previous mentoring experience is required—just a commitment to supporting young people and creating positive change.
Key Responsibilities
Provide weekly mentoring through individual and small group sessions.
Support students’ literacy, mathematics, academic engagement, and social-emotional development.
Manage a caseload of approximately 20 students and maintain accurate documentation.
Complete 1,700 AmeriCorps service hours over the 10-month term.
Support campus-wide CISCT events and school initiatives.
Build relationships with teachers, families, school staff, and community partners.
Implement a student-led service-learning project that promotes civic engagement.
Collaborate with CISCT staff to provide wraparound support for students and families.
Assist with summer enrichment programmes during June.
Attend required training sessions and complete AmeriCorps programme requirements.
Requirements
Passion for working with students in Grades 3–8.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build appropriate relationships with diverse individuals.
Professionalism, initiative, and the ability to work independently.
Comfort using technology for documentation and programme activities.
Commitment to educational equity and an asset-based approach to student support.
Effective communication, flexibility, and teamwork skills.
Must be at least 17 years old at the start of service.
U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident.
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Ability to pass all required background checks.
Commitment to completing the full AmeriCorps service term.
