Catholic Charities kick off ‘40 Cans For Lent’ for the community

Catholic Charities launched the annual ‘40 Cans For Lent’ program geared toward providing basic food items for the community. This follows calls to observe the Lenten season with a show of love, particularly among the vulnerable.

Catholic Charities to tackle hunger

The Diocese of Corpus Christi will start the 40 Cans for Lent on February 18 to April 15, 2026. Rolling out on Ash Wednesday, families and individuals were charged to donate food items according to their capacity.

Donations range from canned food items to other forms of non-perishable goods expected to remain safe during the season. A notable addition from the diocese was the inclusion of low-fat, sugar-free, and sodium-free alternatives to aid people with health challenges.

This comes on the back of calls for food banks and related charities to include diabetic needs in sourcing. According to the diocese, donation bins will be available throughout participating parishes in addition to special requests from schools, organizations, and charity groups.

Food donations will support pantry services at the following locations: Catholic Charities of Corpus Christi, 615 Oliver Ct., Corpus Christi, TX 78408, Holy Family Catholic Church, 2509 Nogales St., Corpus Christi, TX 78418, Mother Teresa Shelter, 513 Sam Rankin Ave., Corpus Christi, TX 78401.”

Anita Rivera, the Diocese’s Emergency Aid Director highlighted the impact on people within the coastal bend.

Similarly, Denver Catholic parishes also urged the community to give to the less privileged throughout the season. In a recent note, members were spurred to contribute with their time, talent, and treasure. Per the note, time could be spent helping the needy at the Samaritan House and other commitments within the state.

Parishes ramp up philanthropy

Overall, the Catholic Church has expanded charity drives in the United States this year. Similar efforts are also recorded globally across education, housing, and food programs.

Last week, students of St. Joseph Catholic School donated shoes to the House of Hope Charity. The fundraiser surpassed 28 bags of shoes, going over 650 pairs.

In another development, the Catholic Church was at the forefront of relief efforts in northern Colombia following heavy floods.
