China sends 60,000 tons of rice to Cuba amid US blockade

China has dispatched the first shipment of 60,000 tonnes of rice to Cuba amid worsening food crisis. The first shipments, including 4,800 tons, began arriving in January 2026.

China’s aid package of 60,000 tons of rice to Cuba signals deepening ties

The Cuban Embassy in China announced on social media platform X that the initial consignment has set sail for Cuba. It describes the donation as a show of solidarity from Beijing, assuring that Cuba is not alone.

The rice shipment forms part of a broader assistance package approved in January by Chinese President Xi Jinping. The package includes $80 million in financial aid to support the purchase of electrical equipment and address urgent needs in the country.

Chinese Ambassador to Havana, Hua Xin, conveyed support to Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canelfollowing high-level engagements between both countries. The discussions highlighted the severity of Cuba’s economic challenges and the continued deterioration of its electricity sector.

“We’re convinced that, with the joint effort of Cuba and China, no blockade will be able to turn off the light of hope, no difficulty will be able to block the path of progress,” Hua xin said.

Food shortages deepen as Cuba relies on external support

The arrival of the rice comes at a critical time for Cuba, where the staple food has become increasingly scarce. When available, it is often sold at prices beyond the reach of many citizens.

While Cuban authorities continue to blame the crisis on the United States blockade, analysts say the situation also reflects long-standing structural inefficiencies. This also includes declining domestic production and growing dependence on imports and external assistance.

Observers note that the latest shipment reflects the vulnerability of the Cuban economy, with essential commodities such as rice increasingly reliant on foreign aid.

Meanwhile, CodePink, a transnational feminist peace organisation, has also sent humanitarian supplies to Cuba. A representative of the group said it is mobilising 30 tonnes of aid under the Nuestra América Convoy initiative aimed at breaking the blockade.

Additionally, humanitarian aid packaged by European activists has recently reached Cuba to help with the fallout of the energy blockade by the US. The package is made up of five tons of medical supplies to help the nation.
