Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) is a funding initiative by the Embassy of Japan in Uganda to support non-profit and community-based organisations in implementing grassroots community development projects. The projects to be funded must be completed in Uganda within one year of funding. The programme awards up to 10 000 000 Japanese Yen per successful project. Applications are open year-round, with deadlines scheduled twice each funding year on 15 February and 15 July.

About The Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) 

The Embassy of Japan in Uganda, under Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) framework, calls for applications for the GGP grant program in Uganda. The grant programme seeks to support NGOs and community-based organisations in promoting community development projects in health, agriculture, and education. Since the grant programme’s introduction in 1989, the GGP has provided financial assistance to non-profit organisations and supported several objectives to strengthen human security and benefit underserved communities. Applications are received only by post, not by email.

Who Can Apply for the Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) 

    • Eligible organisation types: 
    • Nonprofits
    • Community-based organisations (CBOs).
  • Registration requirements:
  • Organisations must be non-profit and community based organisation. 
  • They must have at least 2 years of experience implementing grassroots-level projects.
  • Organisations must be legally registered.
  • Geographic eligibility: Uganda
  • Sector or thematic focus: Community development across sectors such as education, health, water and sanitation, agriculture and natural resource management.

Application Process

  • Visit the official grant website and download the GGP Guidelines template to review the eligibility requirements.
  • Download the concept paper and fill it with appropriate details. 
  • Attach the necessary documents to the concept paper and submit by post to the GGP section, Embassy of Japan, Plot 8, Kyadondo Rd. Nakasero P. O. Box 23553, Kampala, Uganda Tel: 0312-261564/5/6.
  • Applicants will receive notifications through email.

Applications are accepted year-round; however, there are two submission deadlines: February 15 and July 15 of each funding year.

    • The grant is competitive, with a limited number of projects funded per cycle. 
    • Priority focus areas: Projects that directly improve human security and community welfare at the grassroots level in sectors such as education, health, water and sanitation, and agriculture.
