The Israeli state has directly ordered the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine Refugees to immediately vacate its premises being occupied in the Eastern part of Jerusalem come 30 January 2025. The order which is in contradiction with the Israeli’s obligation under international law has sparked controversy given that it entails the agency to completely cease its charity operations in that area.
Israeli’s order: a violation of the UN Agreement
The Israeli state has claimed that the UNRWA has no legitimate right to occupy the premises despite being a signatory to the General Convention on Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations. A convention that granted the UN premises immunity from search, confiscation, and any form of interference including their properties in East Jerusalem.
In their recent statement on January 26, 2025, UNRWA publicly criticized the directive, noting that the development will undermine its mission as well as place its staff and facilities in danger. According to the report, the organization declared that the Israeli’s government goal is to clear the Sheikh Jarrah area for its further settlement expansion, an act that is considered illegal under international law.
UNRWA has also advised the Israeli government to uphold its responsibilities legally while ensuring that its properties and installation remain well protected.
“The inviolability of UN premises is fundamental to the organization’s ability to carry out its humanitarian mandate,” an official UNRWA spokesperson said.
Urgent call for action
Also, a report reaching us states that the Israeli’s decision to expel the UNRWA is in line with the growing anti-UN rhetoric going on in Israel, which has led to increased pressure on the agency’s operations. There is a current widespread argument among critics insisting that the shutting down of the UNRWA properties in this area will severely affect Palestinian refugees who depend on the organization for its healthcare, education, and lifesaving services.
As the tension continues to rise, the international community is keeping closer watch to see how Israel will proceed. One thing is clear though, the maintenance of the UNRWA presence in East Jerusalem is not just a necessity but is legally protected and as such, urgent action must be taken to safeguard its operations.
