Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation (NMIC) is a community-based nonprofit founded in 1979, serving New York City with a focus on Upper Manhattan and the Bronx. With more than 140 staff, NMIC delivers integrated legal, advocacy, education, career, and crisis intervention services that help individuals and families move toward long-term self-sufficiency.
The Role
The Chief Financial & Administrative Officer (CFAO) is a senior leadership position reporting to the Executive Director and serving on the Executive Leadership Team. This hybrid role provides strategic and operational oversight of NMIC’s finance, HR, IT, facilities, compliance, and administrative infrastructure. The CFAO supervises leaders across Finance, HR, and Operations, overseeing a combined team of 20 staff and managing key outsourced partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead financial strategy, forecasting, budgeting, and long-term planning aligned with organizational priorities
- Present financial reporting and analysis to the Board, Finance Committee, and senior leadership
- Oversee audits, 990 filings, regulatory reporting, and compliance reviews
- Manage cash flow, investments, financial risk, and grant portfolio oversight (95% public sector funding)
- Strengthen financial systems, policies, accountability, and cross-departmental financial literacy
- Supervise HR leadership on recruitment, performance management, benefits, and policy modernization
- Oversee IT infrastructure, data security, vendor management, and facilities operations across two locations
- Partner with program leaders to optimize resource allocation and measure return on mission
- Support organizational performance goals, operational resilience, and infrastructure improvements
- Serve as an ex-officio member of Board committees including Finance/Audit
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; CPA or advanced financial training strongly preferred
- 10+ years of progressive nonprofit finance leadership experience, including CFO or senior finance leadership role
- Extensive experience managing large public sector grant portfolios and cost-reimbursement contracts
- Strong background in accounting, audit, compliance, and financial systems oversight
- Experience overseeing or partnering closely with HR and Operations functions
- Proven leadership in change management, team development, and cross-department collaboration
- Excellent communication skills with ability to translate financial data for diverse audiences
- Proficiency with tools such as Office 365, Sage Intacct, Martus, and Salesforce preferred
