About the Organization
Mother’s Outreach Network (MON) is a Washington, DC-based nonprofit advancing racial justice and economic equity for Black mothers impacted by the family policing system. Through legal advocacy, guaranteed income initiatives, community organizing, and mother-led policy work, MON works to keep families together and empower mothers as leaders in shaping systems that affect their lives.
The Role
The Community Organizer will strengthen MON’s grassroots organizing efforts by building trusted relationships with mothers, expanding community engagement, and supporting advocacy campaigns. This role serves as a vital connection between mothers, program staff, and policymakers while helping coordinate events, outreach activities, and legislative engagement efforts across Washington, DC.
Key Responsibilities
Community Organizing & Outreach
- Build and maintain relationships with mothers impacted by the child welfare system.
- Lead outreach, canvassing, and recruitment efforts, particularly in Wards 7 and 8.
- Connect families to MON’s programs, services, and advocacy opportunities.
- Facilitate workshops, trainings, and peer support spaces.
Advocacy & Campaign Support
- Support mothers in preparing testimony for DC Council hearings.
- Coordinate logistics for advocacy events, meetings, and campaigns.
- Assist with organizing initiatives including the Mother Up pilot, Advocacy Day, and budget advocacy efforts.
- Strengthen participation in community actions and policy engagement activities.
Program Coordination & Data Management
- Track outreach, engagement, and organizing metrics.
- Maintain systems for relationship management and community engagement records.
- Support participant compensation and administrative processes.
- Collaborate with legal, policy, communications, and organizing teams to align community engagement efforts.
Requirements
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree.
- At least 2 years of community organizing, advocacy, or grassroots engagement experience.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent relationship-building and stakeholder engagement abilities.
- Commitment to racial justice, economic equity, and Black family empowerment.
- Ability to travel throughout Washington, DC for outreach and community events.
Preferred qualifications include lived experience with the child welfare system, trauma-informed practice experience, workshop facilitation skills, and familiarity with DC government, advocacy campaigns, or organizing platforms.
