The Role

NLSLA is seeking a Director of Housing and Homelessness Prevention to lead its efforts to secure, preserve, and expand access to affordable housing for vulnerable Angelenos. As a member of the Senior Management Team, this leadership role oversees the Stay Housed and Lawyers Preventing and Ending Homelessness Project (PEHP) teams while shaping the organization’s housing strategy through litigation, policy advocacy, coalition building, and systems change initiatives. Reporting to the Legal Director, the successful candidate will help drive impactful advocacy that addresses both immediate housing crises and the structural causes of housing instability.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Advocacy

  • Represent NLSLA in housing and homelessness discussions at local, state, and national levels.
  • Engage with government agencies, elected officials, community organizations, and funders.
  • Participate in housing policy and legislative advocacy activities.

Program and Team Leadership

  • Supervise the leaders of the Stay Housed and PEHP teams.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and professional development opportunities.
  • Convene housing supervisors to promote strategic alignment across programs.

Housing Litigation and Systems Change

  • Support litigation, administrative hearings, and broader advocacy efforts.
  • Identify emerging trends and opportunities for impact litigation and policy reform.
  • Assist attorneys with complex cases, trials, and legal strategy when needed.

Partnerships and Grant Oversight

  • Lead engagement with coalitions and steering committees.
  • Oversee housing grant compliance, contracts, and deliverables.
  • Support contract negotiations, budgeting, and resource planning.

About You

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and active California Bar membership.
  • At least seven years of experience addressing housing issues affecting low-income tenants and unhoused individuals.
  • Minimum of five years of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong commitment to social justice and public interest advocacy.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals experiencing trauma or crisis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in legal aid or public interest law.
  • Senior leadership and strategic planning experience.
  • Jury trial experience.
  • Familiarity with Los Angeles housing systems and stakeholders.
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish or another Los Angeles threshold language.
