The Role
The Head of Journals will lead the editorial and production functions across the Portland Press journal portfolio on a 2-year fixed-term contract (0.6 FTE). Reporting to the Director of Content and Engagement, you will drive publishing strategy, oversee journal operations, manage key partnerships and suppliers, and support the continued growth, quality, and reputation of the portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
Publishing Leadership
- Support delivery of the Portland Press publishing strategy.
- Grow and develop the journals portfolio in line with community needs and business objectives.
- Align publishing and commercial strategies with internal stakeholders.
Operations and Performance
- Oversee publishing systems, workflows, suppliers, and partners.
- Monitor and improve publishing KPIs and service standards.
- Drive innovation and continuous improvement across journal operations.
Team Management
- Lead and develop the Publishing team.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Ensure excellent service for authors, editors, reviewers, and partners.
Requirements
- Significant experience across STM journal publishing systems and processes.
- Strong knowledge of publishing policies, standards, and best practices.
- Experience managing publishing operations and performance metrics.
- Proven leadership and people management skills.
- Ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
