The Homeless Action Center is a community-based legal services nonprofit founded in 1990 that supports people experiencing homelessness in Alameda County. HAC specializes in public benefits advocacy, particularly Social Security disability benefits, helping clients secure income, housing stability, and access to health care through a client-centered, harm reduction approach.

The Role
HAC is hiring a Mail Clerk to work primarily from its Oakland office. This role blends careful mail management, front desk support during drop-in clinics, and community-facing problem-solving. • Staff the front desk during drop-in clinic hours (Mon–Thurs, 1pm–5pm)
  • Verify client identity before releasing secure mail and packages
  • Greet clients and visitors with professionalism, compassion, and respect
  • Maintain cleanliness and supplies in client-facing spaces
  • Assist with outreach, tabling events, and additional administrative support as needed

Requirements

  • Commitment to justice, equity, and harm reduction principles
  • Strong interpersonal, de-escalation, and multitasking skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Teams, and Excel
  • Comfort working with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, or crisis
  • Ability to manage phones, databases, and detailed recordkeeping
  • Prompt, reliable, and highly organized
  • Ability to lift up to 20–25 pounds occasionally

What They Offer

  • $200/month student loan repayment assistance
  • Commuter subsidy and FSA options
  • Generous vacation, sick leave, personal days, and holidays
