About American Families for Vaccines
American Families for Vaccines (AFV) is a national nonprofit organization leading the pro-vaccine grassroots movement across the United States. Through its network of state-based Families for Vaccines chapters, AFV works to protect access to immunization, defend evidence-based vaccine policies, combat misinformation, and strengthen public health outcomes. The organization partners with healthcare providers, advocates, policymakers, and public health leaders to build healthier communities and ensure families have access to accurate vaccine information and protections.
The Role
American Families for Vaccines is seeking a Regional Advocacy Director to oversee a portfolio of state chapters within a designated multi-state region. Reporting to the Director of Advocacy, this leadership role is responsible for supporting State Directors, strengthening grassroots advocacy infrastructure, and ensuring consistent execution of organizational priorities and state-level campaign goals.
The successful candidate will provide strategic guidance, coaching, accountability, and operational support to chapter leaders while helping build sustainable, high-performing advocacy programs. This position also plays an important role in organizational growth by supporting the development and onboarding of new state chapters and helping expand AFV’s grassroots presence across the country.
The role requires regular travel throughout the assigned region, along with occasional national travel for trainings, conferences, strategic planning sessions, and organizational meetings.
Key Responsibilities
State Chapter Leadership and Support
- Supervise and support State Directors across a multi-state region through regular coaching, mentoring, accountability, and performance management.
- Provide leadership development opportunities that strengthen advocacy effectiveness and organizational capacity.
- Support volunteer recruitment, engagement, and retention efforts to build sustainable grassroots infrastructure.
- Assist state teams in developing advocacy readiness and long-term organizational sustainability.
Chapter Development and Expansion
- Identify and assess opportunities for establishing new state chapters within the region.
- Support the launch and growth of new chapters through training, onboarding, and operational guidance.
- Help build effective grassroots organizing structures and advocacy programs for emerging chapters.
Advocacy Operations and Coordination
- Serve as a key liaison between national advocacy leadership and state chapters.
- Ensure consistent implementation of organizational priorities, advocacy strategies, and operational processes.
- Promote collaboration and information sharing across chapter leadership teams.
- Support the development of systems and processes that improve efficiency and effectiveness across the region.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build strong working relationships with chapter leaders, volunteers, advocates, coalition partners, and external stakeholders.
- Foster collaboration across geographically distributed teams.
- Support statewide and regional advocacy initiatives aligned with AFV’s mission and priorities.
Requirements
Essential Qualifications
- Minimum of five years of experience in grassroots advocacy, community organizing, nonprofit leadership, political campaigns, public affairs, or a related field.
- At least two years of direct people management, supervision, or team leadership experience.
- Experience managing multiple projects, stakeholders, teams, or regional initiatives simultaneously.
- Experience developing and implementing grassroots advocacy or community engagement strategies.
- Understanding of state legislative processes and volunteer-driven advocacy efforts.
- Strong interpersonal, relationship-building, and communication skills.
- Experience using advocacy, CRM, or grassroots engagement platforms to track volunteer and campaign activities.
- Ability and willingness to travel regularly within the assigned region.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience managing staff or volunteers across multiple states or distributed teams.
- Background in public health advocacy, healthcare policy, nonprofit advocacy, or issue-based campaigns.
- Experience working within volunteer-led or chapter-based organizational structures.
- Strong facilitation, training, and leadership development skills.
- Multilingual communication skills.
