Khaby Lame, a social media sensation and the world’s most-followed TikToker had been appointed as the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Senegal. The announcement for the position was made at the same time the TikToker visited the West African country in a bid to engage with the children as well as advocate for their rights.
Influencing for good
Having been raised in Italy but of Senegalese roots, Khaby Lame has joined the privileged list of UNICEF ambassadors with the likes of Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Shakira, and Ricky Martins. Having struggled from a poor background where he faced financial challenges a the position of a global icon, Lame has become very passionate about helping children in similar conditions attain their full potential.
On reflecting on his experience, Lame has stressed the importance of opportunity.
“From my own experience as a child fearing poverty, struggling to find my passion at school, and losing my job during the COVID-19 pandemic, to finding my place and calling in the world, I know that all children can thrive when they are given a chance and opportunity,” he said.
During his visit to Senegal, Lame spent time with children at a shelter in Dakar, where many had escaped violence, abuse, and exploitation. He also visited a school for children with disabilities, sharing his struggles with dyslexia and dyscalculia. Committed to bridging educational gaps, he provided access to technology to help students enhance their learning.

With his extensive influence that runs beyond silent video comedies, Lame has a total of over 162 million followers on TikTok, a platform that he is using to inspire and uplift people. His rise to fame which happened as a result of a video he made during the pandemic where he humorously exposed some unnecessary “life hacks,” made him one of the most recognized worldwide internet personalities.
Catherine Russell the UNICEF Executive Director has experienced her excitement over his appointment, emphasizing the significance of his work.
“His creativity and unique perspective on the world have inspired hundreds of millions of followers and will continue to motivate others in raising their voices and telling their stories in their unique ways,” she said.
With his new position as the UNICEF Ambassador, lame hopes to empower the youths and young children of Senegal as well as advocate for their protection, education, and equal opportunities. He believes that using himself as proof that anyone can turn challenges into success given the right encouragement and platform hence his determination to help others do the same.
