Michigan State University and GiveDirectly have scaled the Rx Kids program in the region. This program will see more families benefit from cash grants before and after childbirth.
Rx Kids Program Now In 15 Counties
In a recent announcement, the Michigan State University disclosed a broadened Rx Kids program to all 15 counties in the Upper Peninsula. The expanded program will cover up to 18,000 children annually in Michigan.
This includes a prenatal cash payment of $1,500 and $500 for the first six months after delivery, marking the first community-based prenatal program in the country. Previously, Michigan State University and GiveDirectly, the project’s administrators, only covered five counties.
According to the release, ten new counties, Baraga, Delta, Dickinson, Ontonagon, Marquette, Iron, Houghton, Gogebic, Keweenaw, and Menominee, are now eligible to join the verification process. The move has been lauded by several locals and charity groups as key to helping families through childbirth.
The Rx Kids program kicked off in 2024 and has recorded several positives in a couple of years. Selected families utilize funds to cover essential supplies like food, child care, and medical bills. Notably, several beneficiaries appreciated the relief and reduced financial burden through the process.
Childbirth is tough. It’s a vulnerable time for new parents welcoming a child into the world. RX Kids is supporting parents so babies can have the strong start they deserve.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer noted the Rx Kids initiative as a model across the United States for families. This goal ultimately targets health, wellbeing and child development.
“Michigan is leading the nation by giving moms and babies the support they need to thrive. Rx Kids is an innovative, bipartisan program designed to improve health outcomes and reduce child poverty, the first of its kind in the country.”
At the moment, several local health experts have indicated support through engagement drives. Multiple philanthropic organizations are also invested in funding to cater to more families. The State of Michigan committed $250 million to a wider expansion over the next three years.
Globally, charities have also increased funding towards children and young adults. Through aid and grants, organizations continue to assist in key areas including education, health care, and housing.
Last month, Save The Children announced fresh educational efforts in Sudan amid war concerns. The organization provided school meals and learning spaces despite catastrophic humanitarian crises.
