The Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has paid his tribute to the courageous and dedicated Andrew Omotor, a firefighter who tragically lost his life while on duty responding to an emergency call. The 45-year-old left behind a wife, six young children, and an elderly mother.

Represented by the state’s Head of Service, Dr. Anthony Okungbowa, the governor extended his condolences during the visit to the bereaved family in Benin City. The delegation included key officials such as the likes of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Safety and Security, Queeneth Orobedo, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Hon. Jerry Idahosa, and the Director of the Edo State Fire Service, Mr. Omoluru Osayande.

Supporting the bereaved

During the visit, Dr. Okungbowa described Omotor as a dedicated and brave individual who put his life on the line for the safety of others. He also confirmed that another firefighter injured in the same incident is currently receiving the necessary treatment and emergency care at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

Speaking on behalf of the state government, Okungbowa noted that this initial visit is aimed at comforting the grieving family and assessing their immediate needs. He assured the family of continued support, emphasizing the governor’s personal commitment to addressing their welfare.

“We are here to commiserate with the family of one of our fallen heroes, Mr. Andrew Omotor, who responded to a distress call to save lives and properties but, sadly, lost his life in the process. This is a painful loss, and the governor is deeply moved. He has assured he will personally visit the family to offer support and condolences.”

The tragic incident underscores the risks firefighters face daily in the line of duty. Omotor’s colleagues, while mourning his loss, have also highlighted the importance of additional resources and safety measures to protect those who put their lives on the line repeatedly for the community.

Governor Okpebholo’s administration has also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the welfare of emergency responders and their families. As part of its broader safety agenda, the state aims to improve conditions for first responders and enhance public awareness of their invaluable contributions.

With Omotor’s selfless sacrifice leaving an indelible mark on Edo State, the government and community remain united in honoring his legacy while extending a helping hand to his grieving family.
