PHILADELPHIA–NRG Energy Inc., a Fortune 200 energy and smart home company, today announced a partnership with the Cobbs Creek Foundation to support the revitalization and transformation of the Cobbs Creek Golf & Education Campus and expand youth and community opportunity in West Philadelphia.

The $500,000 investment from NRG and its smart home and security brand, Vivint, will support expanded programming while also advancing innovative approaches to more sustainable, efficient smart energy solutions. As part of this collaboration, the central gathering space within the Smilow Woodland TGR Learning Lab, operated by TGR Foundation, will be branded the “Vivint + NRG Hub,” serving as a dedicated area for connection, collaboration, and student programming.

“We are grateful for NRG and Vivint’s partnership and look forward to their engagement with the Cobbs Creek community,” said Jeff Shanahan, President of the Cobbs Creek Foundation. “The Vivint + NRG Hub will strengthen the student experience inside the Learning Lab and advance our mission to expand access to education, wellness, and opportunity for young people and families across West Philadelphia.”

NRG and Vivint, with more than 8 million residential customers, are advancing competitive power markets through innovation, bringing together smart home technologies and energy services to help address energy affordability while providing greater comfort and security for their customers.

Shanahan added: “That same spirit of innovation aligns with the Foundation’s long-term vision for Cobbs Creek, which includes environmental restoration, youth development, sustainable infrastructure, and the creation of workforce pathways across growing industries. Together, our organizations aim to connect education, wellness, and career exposure in ways that create lasting impact for West Philadelphia residents.”

As part of the collaboration, NRG will also introduce a long-drive competition benefiting local nonprofits and provide ongoing opportunities for its employees to volunteer and mentor students. LPGA Tour player Lauren Coughlin, the recent winner of the Grant Thornton Invitational, will host a putting clinic with local children at Cobbs Creek on April 10.

“We’re proud to help bring innovation that makes everyday life more affordable, while partnering with Cobbs Creek Foundation to create opportunities that transform lives,” said Kevin Cole, Head of East Energy for NRG. “The Vivint + NRG Hub will ‘change the game’ as a place where students feel supported, inspired, and connected, and we look forward to deepening our engagement with the Cobbs Creek community.”

The nonprofit Cobbs Creek Foundation is leading the larger revitalization of the historic public golf course and 350 acres of green space spanning Philadelphia and Upper Darby Township. Its mission is to create the country’s most progressive Golf & Education Campus, providing economic and educational opportunities for the community.
