Rescue charity under pressure after intake of neglected stray dogs

A Welsh animal rescue charity is under mounting pressure after taking in four severely neglected bulldogs. It leaves volunteers to cover substantial veterinary bills and squeeze the animals into kennels already stretched to capacity.

Four neglected bulldogs arrive in terrified state

The Rescue Hotel shared the distressing story on social media after Cardiff Dogs Home received the dogs. The dogs in terrible condition are named by the charity as Jack, Daniel, Pina, and Colada.

The four bulldogs, two male and two female, are believed to be suffering from various medical conditions. A member of the public reportedly found the dogs tied up.

In a social media post, the charity stated that when kennel staff attempted to put leads on the animals, the dogs showed terror. The charity suspects the four have never been walked on leads, as they were unable to walk without panicking or choking themselves.

Jack, Daniel, and Pina all suffer from cherry eye, a common inherited condition that the Blue Cross describes as occurring. Pina also has an umbilical hernia and a skin infection, while Colada has a cleft lip.

“when a dog’s tear gland in their third eyelid becomes swollen and red, and covers part of their eye,” the charity said.

Each dog requires veterinary treatment and corrective surgery, which can take place at the charity’s on-site Health Centre.

Rescue charity faces mounting vet bills and kennel pressure

In their social media post, The Rescue Hotel said cases of neglect like this leave them facing large, unexpected vet bills. They thanked their supporters for donations that make their work possible.

However, the charity noted that they are fortunate to have an on-site Health Centre where their vet can perform the necessary surgeries. They also acknowledged that the arrival of four stray dogs in such terrible condition still represents a high unforeseen cost.

Additionally, they explained that the sudden intake places immense pressure on kennel staff, who were already caring for a large number of dogs. On the night the bulldogs arrived, the kennels were already at capacity, with two additional stray dogs arriving later that evening.

“Every donation helps to change a dog’s future. while the vet bill is substantial, supporter contributions enable us to fund life-changing surgeries,” the charity said.

According to its website, The Rescue Hotel is a passionate, volunteer-led charity dedicated to supporting the dogs at Cardiff Dogs Home. A group of volunteers founded the charity in late 2019 with the mission of improving the lives of rescue dogs.

The charity has also attracted support from several famous faces along the way. This includes Lewis Capaldi, Fontaines D.C., Charlotte Church, and Sam Warburton.

In another development, a self-funded animal rescue charity facing an uncertain future due to the cost of living crisis has launched an Animal care fundraiser. This will complete a new commercial boarding kennel and cattery, a project it says will secure half of its annual operating costs forever.
