Fifteen emergency responders killed and buried in Rafah
Israeli forces fired on a convoy of ambulances, a fire truck and a UN vehicle responding to distress calls in the Tel al-Sultan area of Rafah before dawn on 23 March. Eight Palestine Red Crescent paramedics, six Palestinian Civil Defence responders and one UNRWA staff member were killed. Their bodies and vehicles were buried in the sand and were not recovered until a joint PRCS and OCHA mission reached the site a week later. The Israeli military initially said the vehicles were unlit and uncoordinated, an account contradicted by video recovered from a victim's phone, and later attributed the killings to professional failures.
