A truck bomb tore through the United Nations headquarters at the Canal Hotel in Baghdad on the afternoon of 19 August 2003. Twenty two people were killed and more than 100 were injured, making it the deadliest single attack on UN personnel in the organisation's history. The bombing is commemorated each year as World Humanitarian Day.
