Family urges Bristol council to approve mural for British victims in Gaza
James Kirby, 47, a former serviceman from Bristol, died alongside six other World Central Kitchen (WCK) workers. They died when Israeli armed drones struck their aid convoy on 1 April 2024.
The attack, which targeted three clearly marked vehicles, occurred as the convoy left a WCK warehouse in the south of Gaza City.
Speaking on the second anniversary of his death, James’ cousin, Louise Kirby, urged Bristol City Council to approve a mural set in surrounding marble. They describe it as a fitting tribute to his service and dedication.
Although the council has not yet responded to requests for comment.
“The family would appreciate any support the council can offer to help immortalise our city’s hero forever,” Louise said.
Two other British ex-servicemen died in same attack
The same Israeli drone strike also killed two other British nationals. These include John Chapman, 57, and James “Jim” Henderson, 33.
“All three were British citizens and former members of the Armed Forces, who continued their lives of service in support of others,” Louise said.
She added that James was her aunt’s only son, and his loss has left an unimaginable void in her life. The pain of losing a child is something she carries every day.
Louise described James as deeply loved by the entire family. He is remembered for his courage, compassion, and dedication to helping others.
Ahead of his funeral in May 2024, James’ mother, Jacqui Kirby, called him a remarkable man.
Meanwhile, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) dismissed two officers and reprimanded three others over the incident. It also described the situation as a serious mistake.
In a recent development, a coalition of eight Arab and Islamic nations has issued a forceful condemnation of Israel’s repeated Gaza ceasefire violations. The concurrent crisis deepens for Palestinian refugees in occupied East Jerusalem following the targeted disruption of vital UN agency services.
