UNRWA claims Israel violated Gaza ceasefire – Here’s Why

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has accused Israel of violating the standing Gaza ceasefire and intensifying a systematic campaign against its humanitarian operations in both Gaza and Jerusalem. The agency outlined a series of provocative actions by Israeli authorities, which it says breach international law and endanger civilian lives.

Israeli forces target UNRWA, cut services in Jerusalem

According to a detailed situation report by UNRWA, the incidents follow the widespread international condemnation of Israel’s large-scale demolition of structures inside the UNRWA headquarters in East Jerusalem. In the early hours of January 25, the remaining parts of the torched compound caught fire.

Furthermore, Israeli authorities cut off water and electricity supplies to UNRWA facilities inside Shu’fat Camp. The camp, home to over 16,000 registered Palestinian refugees, lies within what Israel claims as Jerusalem’s municipal boundary.

“UNRWA condemns this act as the latest enforcement of what it terms anti-UNRWA laws, implemented in defiance of rulings from the International Court of Justice.”

Despite the ceasefire agreement reached in October 2025, UN monitoring partners report significant ongoing Israeli military activity across all five governorates of Gaza. These operations include aerial attacks, shelling, and gunfire, resulting in continued civilian casualties.

Gaza ceasefire fails to halt civilian deaths

The Gaza Ministry of Health, citing data from the UN human rights office (OHCHR), states that Israeli attacks have killed 477 Palestinians since the ceasefire began.

Although the World Food Programme (WFP) noted a slight improvement in household consumption patterns in December. Its latest Market Monitor, however, reveals that one in four Gazan households still survives on only one meal per day.

Additionally, a grim milestone was also recorded this winter, with the Ministry of Health reporting at least nine child deaths from hypothermia. UNRWA is urgently appealing for Israel to allow the entry of batteries, solar panels, and other energy sources to establish communal heating spaces.

Findings by Charity Journal reveal that, amidst the crisis, a glimmer of relief came with the entry of nearly 5,170 recreational kits for children. UNICEF confirmed the kits, containing notebooks, pencils, erasers, and crayons, will support the learning of more than 375,000 children.

In a coordinated health effort with the Ministry of Health, WHO, and UNICEF, UNRWA vaccinated 2,087 children during a 10-day campaign ending January 25, utilizing 23 health facilities and 35 medical teams.

Meanwhile, the Israeli state has directly ordered the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine Refugees to immediately vacate its premises being occupied in the Eastern part of Jerusalem. The order, which is in contradiction with Israel’s obligation under international law, has sparked controversy.
