Aldi, the fourth-largest supermarket in the UK, has collaborated with local good causes nationwide to donate fresh and chilled foods from its stores after they closed early on Christmas and New Year’s Eve. In collaboration with Aldi, Neighbourly, the community giving platform, discovered that 78% of the good causes it supports were under increased pressure to meet demands last Christmas compared to the previous year.
Furthermore, 51% felt unable to respond to every help request due to funding and capacity constraints. The supermarket donated £25,000 to Neighbourly’s GoGive Christmas campaign, which supports local charities in the UK and Ireland.
Aldi and Neighbourly expand support with surplus food donations
Since 2019, Aldi has worked with Neighbourly to provide surplus food from all its UK stores to hundreds of charities nationwide. This ongoing initiative has had a significant impact, ensuring these charities can continue their vital work throughout the year. The National Sustainability Director at Aldi UK, Luke Emery, said.
“This Christmas, we were proud to support so many incredible charities across the UK who provide essential support to those in need. The services provided by food banks are more important than ever over the festive period, and we’re committed to ensuring those that rely on them have access to a wide range of high-quality foods.”
“We’re so grateful to have had Aldi’s support for another year. Christmas is one of our charities’ busiest periods, and the donations from Aldi mean we can help even more people across the country who need extra support over the festive period.”CEO at Neighbourly Steve Butterworth added.Â
Through community donation points in Aldi stores nationwide, shoppers can donate food to local charities, food banks, and community groups. Aldi also works with Company Shop Group, the UK’s leading redistribution of surplus food and household products, to redistribute surplus food from its Regional Distribution Centers.Â
Last year, it helped provide over 2,000 free Christmas lunches to Company Shop’s Award-Winning Social Enterprise Community Shop. Aldi continues to impact many lives by leveraging its resources and partnerships, especially during the holiday season.Â
Through innovative partnerships with Neighbourly and Company Shop Group, the supermarket has set an example of corporate social responsibility that goes beyond business.
