Broken Biscuits sends vets to China to treat dogs with severe injuries

A United Kingdom-based charity, Broken Biscuits, specialising in disabled dogs has dispatched a team of veterinary experts on a 5,000-mile mission to China. The vet experts are to treat canines rescued from the country’s illegal dog meat trade.

Broken Biscuits performs life-changing surgeries on dogs

Broken Biscuits Charity, headquartered in Lincolnshire, deployed volunteers to Harbin in north-east China on March 15. The team includes two specialist orthopaedic veterinarians from The Vet Station.

They will collaborate with Harbin SHS Animal Rescue, a sanctuary established by Irish rescuer Hayley, which provides refuge and medical care for dogs saved from the meat trade.

Broken Biscuits noted that many animals arriving at the facility present with untreated fractures, joint damage, and spinal injuries. This is resulting from prolonged neglect and harsh living conditions.

“Several dogs currently lack mobility and would face lifelong confinement in shelters without specialist medical intervention,” Broken Biscuits said.

During the mission, the UK-based veterinarians will conduct orthopaedic assessments and surgical procedures. They will also train local shelter staff in specialist skills and rehabilitation techniques.

The initiative aims to enhance long-term care for injured dogs and address mobility-related conditions effectively.

Severely injured canines to travel to Britain for specialist rehabilitation

Under the collaboration, some rescued dogs will travel to Europe. The most severely injured animals will relocate to the UK under Broken Biscuits’ care.

Additionally, once in Britain, they will undergo orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation through the charity’s veterinary partners. This is with the objective of restoring mobility and securing permanent homes.

Tim Giles of Broken Biscuits stated that disabled dogs are often the ones left behind, even after they’ve been rescued. Giles said many of the dogs they are going to help have injuries that have never been treated.

“With the right surgery and rehabilitation, they can walk again and live happy lives. This mission is about giving those dogs a real future and also sharing our vets’ knowledge so many more dogs can be helped long after we leave,” he added.

Broken Biscuits specialises in rescuing and rehabilitating disabled and mobility-impaired dogs. This includes animals with paralysis, amputations, and complex orthopaedic conditions that traditional rescue pathways frequently overlook.

Meanwhile, a California City woman’s swift action has recently saved a severely injured dog from a worsening fate, prompting a rescue group operation and an ongoing investigation.
