California Credit Union Foundation targets education gaps through community funding

The California Credit Union Foundation raised $40,000 during its third annual Day at the Races fundraiser to support scholarships, teacher grants, and community initiatives across Southern California. The organization says it is increasingly directing support toward underserved schools and expanding financial literacy pathways for underbanked families navigating long-term economic instability.

California Credit Union Foundation expands support for underserved schools

The fundraiser, held at Santa Anita Park on May 15, brought together community leaders, credit union partners, and local supporters to raise funding for education and family-focused programs.

The California Credit Union Foundation, the nonprofit philanthropic arm of California Credit Union, focuses on scholarships, educator grants, financial wellness initiatives, and support programs for military families and local nonprofits.

“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us and made this event so meaningful,” said Marvel Ford, California Credit Union Foundation President. “The enthusiasm and generosity of our sponsors, partners, and community friends reflect a deep, collective commitment to expanding opportunity and strengthening the communities we serve.”

The Foundation noted that its grant review process increasingly focuses on schools and educators operating in high-need environments where budget constraints limit classroom resources and enrichment opportunities.

“We are not using a one-size-fits-all formula, but our grant selection process continues to focus on need, potential impact, and alignment with the Foundation’s mission to support educators, students, and underserved communities,” Ford told Charity Journal.

Foundation leaders added that they evaluate factors including student need, available school resources, and whether funding can provide classroom opportunities that schools would otherwise struggle to afford.

Foundation expands financial literacy efforts for underbanked families

Beyond educational support, California Credit Union and its Foundation continue expanding financial literacy and access initiatives aimed at helping underbanked and financially vulnerable families.

The organization disclosed that its financial education strategy combines workshops, digital learning tools, and individualized counseling rather than relying on a single standardized framework.

California Credit Union partners with organizations, including GreenPath Financial Wellness and Bite of Reality, to provide services focused on debt management, credit-building, affordable banking access, and homeownership preparation.

“These efforts are designed to meet people where they are, from students in Title I schools to families working to build credit, manage debt, access affordable accounts, or prepare for homeownership,” said Ford.

According to the organization, nearly 60,000 individuals accessed financial literacy resources through these initiatives in 2025 alone. The Foundation also pointed to broader access-focused services, including Bank On-certified accounts, inclusive lending programs, and first-time homebuyer support systems designed to improve long-term financial stability.

In 2025, California Credit Union said it helped more than 225 families achieve first-time homeownership through education programs and personalized financial guidance.

Community investment becomes central to credit union strategy

California Credit Union Foundation confirmed that its broader mission centers on strengthening financial well-being through targeted local partnerships and direct community investment.

Established in 2024, the Foundation distributed approximately $179,000 in grants and sponsorships last year while supporting more than 90 schools and nonprofit organizations. California Credit Union also covers all administrative expenses for the Foundation, allowing all public donations to flow directly into programs and community initiatives.

The Foundation said it plans to continue expanding its support for underserved schools, financial wellness programs, and military family initiatives as community fundraising and partnerships grow.
