About the Charles Wallace Visiting Fellowship Program

The program is part of the British Council’s broader commitment to international educational and cultural exchange. It supports two core objectives: enabling high-level study and research in the UK, and facilitating professional networking with international peers. Fellowship placements may be hosted by university departments, professional institutions, or arts and cultural organizations, giving applicants flexibility to align their visit with their specific professional needs and career goals.

Funding Size

  • Monthly living grant: £1,600
  • Contribution towards visa and travel expenses: £1,250
  • Fellows are responsible for arranging their own accommodation, internal UK travel, and host institution coordination

Who Can Apply

  • Pakistani nationals residing in Pakistan at the time of application
  • Mid-career professionals aged between 30 and 55 years
  • Applicants undertaking university-based research are normally expected to hold a doctoral degree
  • A written invitation from a UK host institution is mandatory before submitting an application
  • Applicants who have studied in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Europe, or China within the last five years are not eligible
  • Previous recipients of a Charles Wallace award are not eligible
  • Applications prepared or enhanced using artificial intelligence tools will be disqualified

Geographic Eligibility

  • Open to Pakistani nationals only
  • Fellowship visits are undertaken in the United Kingdom
  • Host institutions may be based anywhere in the UK

Sector or Thematic Focus

  • Social sciences and humanities
  • Arts and creative industries, including all forms of artistic practice
  • Environmental sciences
  • Medical sciences

Application Process

Applicants must independently identify and secure a written invitation from a UK host institution before applying. The British Council does not assist in securing host placements. Once an invitation is confirmed, applicants complete the official online application form and submit all required documents by email to the designated program address. Shortlisted candidates are called for an interview, conducted online or in person, typically in late June or early July. Successful applicants begin their fellowships from September onwards.

  • All materials must be submitted electronically; hard copy applications are not accepted

  • Application deadline: 5 June 2026
  • Shortlisting and interviews: late June to early July 2026
  • Fellowship commencement: September 2026 onwards

Selection Notes

  • The program targets mid-career professionals; early-career applicants and recent graduates are not eligible
  • Host invitations must be secured independently before applying; applications submitted without a host invitation will not be considered
  • Use of AI tools in application materials is grounds for disqualification
  • Meeting eligibility criteria does not guarantee an award; selection is competitive
