About
FIDA-Uganda, officially known as the Uganda Association of Women Lawyers, is a nonprofit, membership-based feminist organization established in 1974. The organization is dedicated to advancing gender equality, promoting social justice, and protecting the rights of women and children across Uganda. It works toward building a just and peaceful society in which women and children can enjoy their rights and access equal opportunities, regardless of their social or economic circumstances.
A central part of FIDA-Uganda’s work is providing legal aid and improving access to justice for women and vulnerable communities. Through its network of offices, lawyers, community legal volunteers, and partnerships with local authorities, the organization offers legal assistance, guidance, and support to people facing barriers to justice. Its work includes addressing issues related to family law, domestic violence, property rights, and other violations of women's and children's rights.
FIDA-Uganda also engages in advocacy, public interest litigation, and legal and policy reform to challenge discriminatory laws and practices. Through public education, community outreach, and engagement with government institutions, the organization raises awareness of human rights and promotes accountability. It also works to strengthen gender-responsive governance and address systemic inequalities that limit women's participation in social, economic, and political life.
In addition, FIDA-Uganda promotes women's economic empowerment, business and human rights, climate justice, and leadership development. Through these areas of work, it seeks to strengthen women's participation in decision-making, expand access to economic opportunities, and encourage inclusive development. By combining legal services, advocacy, education, and community engagement, FIDA-Uganda continues to work toward a society where women and children are protected, empowered, and able to exercise their rights.
