Global Sumud Flotilla makes first stop in Sicily for boats to join fleet

The Global Sumud Flotilla has arrived in Sicily, Italy, after spending the past 11 days on the Mediterranean Sea following its departure from Barcelona on April 12. Additional boats will join the fleet as it leaves Sicily and continues its mission towards Gaza.

More vessels to join the Global Sumud Flotilla in Italy

The Global Sumud Flotilla, in a post on X, announced its arrival in Sicily, Italy, where it is taking a short break before continuing its mission towards Gaza. This comes after the fleet spent about 11 days on the Mediterranean Sea following their departure from Barcelona.

The flotilla real-time tracker also indicates that the vessels are in Italy. According to it, as of April 23 (13:12 UTC), 38 vessels that are part of the flotilla’s mission are now docked in Sicily.

Moreover, the stop in Italy was part of the organiser’s plan. The break will give organisers and concerned individuals a chance to meet. Organisers will load the ships with additional food and medical supplies during the stop.

Additional vessels are also expected to join the fleet and depart with the flotilla as it continues its mission. Another twenty ships departed Marseille, France, to support the flotilla’s humanitarian efforts.

Overall, organisers expect more vessels to join the flotilla, and the fleet is expected to reach about 100 boats with over 1000 participants from all over the world. This mission is called the “Spring Mission 2026” and is one of the largest, according to the organisers.

This is the flotilla’s second attempt at trying to get aid into Gaza. Israeli forces intercepted the flotilla’s first attempt in 2025 and took its participants into custody.

Apart from delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, the mission also aims to challenge Israel’s blockade of aid into the region. Doctors, technicians, and specialists will also disembark in Gaza to help fast-track the region’s recovery.

Flotilla organisers are taking measures to advocate for Gaza

In addition to the humanitarian fleet heading towards Gaza, the Global Sumud Flotilla Parliamentary Congress also convened to advocate for peace in the region. The congress brought together political leaders from around the world to advocate for peace in Gaza.

The congress held in Brussels made a declaration regarding the state of the region. The statement was called the “Brussels Declaration on State Responsibility and the Realization of Palestinian Self-Determination.” It highlighted the political and legal situation in Gaza.

Additionally, UN special rapporteurs attended the congress. They provided factual groundwork and independent assessments on the situation in Gaza.
