About
Women Volunteers for Peace (WOVOP) is a women-led, community-based organization headquartered in Kisumu County, Kenya. Established in 2019, the organization is dedicated to promoting peacebuilding, women's empowerment, health education, and community resilience. It focuses particularly on supporting at-risk girls and young women by strengthening their participation in peace and security initiatives across western Kenya's Lake Region.
A major part of WOVOP's work involves promoting women's participation in peacebuilding and conflict prevention. Through peace education, advocacy, mentorship, and community engagement, the organization helps young women develop leadership skills and participate in addressing conflicts affecting their schools and communities. It also creates safe spaces where girls and women can share their experiences, discuss community challenges, and contribute to peaceful coexistence.
WOVOP also promotes adolescent sexual and reproductive health education and mental health awareness. Its programmes seek to improve access to reliable health information, encourage informed decision-making, and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health challenges. Through mentorship networks and psychosocial support, the organization connects girls and women with counsellors, community leaders, and other support systems to strengthen emotional well-being and resilience.
In addition, Women Volunteers for Peace works on climate adaptation and community resilience, recognizing the effects of environmental challenges on vulnerable populations. Through volunteer programmes, partnerships, and community-based initiatives, it encourages collective action and strengthens local capacity to respond to emerging challenges. By combining peace education, health promotion, psychosocial support, and environmental resilience, WOVOP aims to build healthier, safer, and more peaceful communities where women and girls can actively shape their futures.
