The National Heritage Fellowships, administered by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), honor lifetime achievements in traditional, folk, and cultural arts. These fellowships recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the nation’s cultural heritage and the preservation and transmission of traditional arts.
About the National Heritage Fellowships
Since its inception in 1982, the National Heritage Fellowships program has celebrated nearly 500 artists across a wide variety of disciplines. Awardees have included visual and textile artists, dancers, musicians, woodworkers, quilters, filmmakers, archivists, and community activists. Fellows are chosen for their excellence in traditional arts and their dedication to sustaining and passing on cultural practices to future generations.
Funding Size
Each National Heritage Fellowship award provides a monetary prize of $25,000 to recipients, in addition to recognition through listing on the NEA National Heritage Fellowships web page.
Who Can Apply
Nominees must:
• Be recognized as exemplary practitioners of traditional, folk, or cultural arts
• Demonstrate significant contributions to living arts, their communities, or the transmission of traditional knowledge
