Flotilla disrupts course of Israel-headed cargo ship

The Global Sumud Flotilla, on its mission to Gaza, interrupted the MSC Maya as it journeyed towards Israel. Twenty boats broke away from the flotilla and attempted to divert the MSC Maya.

MSC Maya is a cargo ship carrying military equipment to Israel. The vessel encountered the flotilla on the Mediterranean Sea, where the flotilla managed to briefly divert the cargo ship.

The Global Sumud Flotilla organisers cite evidence that the MSC is a major carrier of materials used for Israeli weapons. It took the flotilla two days to plan flagging down the vessel in the vicinity of the Barcelona fleet.

Initially, the organisers attempted to divert the cargo ship with just 13 boats. About 20 boats in total, however, circled the cargo vessel. The whole operation took about three hours.

“The ships managed to successfully slow them down and force them to turn slightly off course, costing them fuel and time. This is just the beginning. We will not stop, we will not rest, until Palestine is free,” the organisers said.

Furthermore, the organisers also noted that ending the conflict in Gaza required ending complicity and that included bringing the weapons industry to its knees. The organisers have accused companies that facilitate the flow of weapons as participants in the genocide in Gaza, not as passive actors.

“This action was taken because governments around the world have chosen inaction in the face of overwhelming evidence of mass atrocity,” read the release by the organisers.

Sources have confirmed that MSC has made hundreds of shipments to and from illegal Israeli settlements.

More ships to join Global Sumud Flotilla in Italy

According to the flotilla real-time tracker, as of April 21 (14:09 UTC), the flotilla is in the Mediterranean Sea, near Sicily, Italy. Organizers expect more boats from Italy to join the fleet.

There are about 39 boats currently active in the journey towards Gaza. The mission plans to challenge the Israeli blockade of aid into the Gaza region and bring humanitarian aid to citizens in Gaza.

The fleet expects additional boats from France and Greece to join soon. Organisers expect more than 100 boats and 1000 participants to join the fleet on its mission to Gaza.
