Greater Hartford Gives Foundation traces its roots to 1925, when bankers Maynard T. Hazen and Clark T. Durant established a community-wide charitable endowment with a single $1,000 bequest and a vision of creating a permanent, responsive philanthropic resource for the region. A century later, that modest seed has grown into more than $1.2 billion in charitable assets stewarded across over 1,500 donor funds, with the foundation having distributed more than $1 billion in grants to nonprofits serving 29 towns and nearly 800,000 residents across Greater Hartford. The foundation channels resources through competitive grantmaking, donor-advised funds, and the nationally recognized Greater Together Community Funds, a participatory program that places grant decisions in the hands of resident-led committees in each of the 29 communities it serves. Under President and CEO Jay Williams, the organization centers its discretionary work on dismantling structural racism and advancing equity in social and economic mobility, with particular attention to the region's Black and Latino communities, while continuing to honor donor intent across its vast network of charitable funds.
