The American National Red Cross, commonly known as the American Red Cross, is a humanitarian nonprofit organization founded by Clara Barton on May 21, 1881. The organization provides emergency assistance, disaster relief and disaster preparedness services across the United States and supports humanitarian efforts internationally.
The Red Cross also operates one of the largest blood collection and distribution networks in the United States, supplying about 40% of the nation's blood products. Its other major services include lifesaving training, international humanitarian aid, and assistance for military members, veterans and their families. The organization relies heavily on volunteers and public donations to deliver its programs.
