The Gates Foundation is the world's largest private philanthropic organization, founded in January 2000 by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his then-wife Melinda French Gates. The organization dropped "Bill & Melinda" from its name in 2025, rebranding simply as the Gates Foundation, and is led by CEO Mark Suzman under the direction of Bill Gates and the foundation's governing board.
The foundation's mission centers on creating a world where everyone has the chance to live a healthy and productive life, regardless of where they were born. Its work concentrates on three core goals: ensuring no mother or child dies of a preventable cause, controlling or eradicating deadly infectious diseases, and helping people lift themselves out of poverty toward prosperity. As of the end of 2025, the foundation's trust endowment stood at about 89 billion dollars, and total grant payments since inception had reached 90 billion dollars. In 2025 alone, the foundation distributed roughly 8.5 billion dollars in charitable support, up from about 8 billion dollars the year before.
In early 2026, the foundation made a significant structural commitment, raising its annual payout to a historic 9 billion dollars while formally locking in a closure date. This accelerated spending plan is meant to concentrate resources on the foundation's three primary goals before it winds down entirely in 2045. Leadership has framed the deadline as a rare opportunity to make transformative progress within a defined window, pushing to direct as much of every dollar as possible toward outcomes rather than overhead.
The foundation currently employs more than 2,200 people and maintains regional offices across four continents. Unlike many grantmakers, it is largely strategy driven rather than proposal driven, developing multi-year strategies around specific problems, such as polio eradication or expanding access to contraceptives, and then seeking out organizations able to execute pieces of that strategy. Its scale and approach have made it a dominant force in global health and development philanthropy, though its size has also drawn scrutiny from watchdog groups and researchers who track how its funding shapes global health and education policy.
